How Gender Quotas Work in Switzerland

Abstract As a democratic latecomer, Switzerland enfranchised women in 1971. In 2019, the Swiss elected 42% to lower chamber (Nationalrat) with no legal quota force and only few parties list quota. How did this happen? its crosscutting cleavages, several institutionalized mechanisms cope divisive aspects of diversity have been developed, among others, informal proportional representation. They seem spilled over question gender politics. This chapter analyses workings (formal) on party lists significance (informal) for election national ministers: when nominate candidates legislative executive office, is one feature others (like region, age, profession or wing) that should be addressed. It discusses which respect quotas can serve as institutional equivalents politics if solution sustainable.
